Romance Unleashed

Are you Team Peeta or Team Gale? Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah? We’ll teach you how to woo your readers and leave them wanting more.

One Page Wonder

Craft the world of a novel on a single page — yes, you can do it! Welcome to the place where less is more. We’ll look at the shortest stories from around the world, and explore the limitless possibilities of micro-fiction.

Girls Rising x Uptown Hub

Girls, it's time. Time to be smart, time to be creative, time to let your voice be heard! During this girls-only writing intensive, you'll get energized by a few lady rebels from history, and be surrounded by girls who are ready to take on the world, just like you.

Our Uptown

Calling all kid-journalists and fiction writers! In this workshop, we will hone our journalistic skills by interviewing the people who run, work at, and visit our favorite neighborhood spots.

Poetry at The Met Cloisters

Want to spend time with unicorns, jewels, tombs, and all things medieval? Ever look at a painting and find yourself spinning an epic story behind it? If that’s you, join us for Poetry at The Met Cloisters!

What the Flip Books

We’re going back to the roots of animation, using just watercolors, ink, pencils, and the magic of flip books. We’ll break down movements of the illustrated stories we want to tell, bringing our vibrant worlds to life in our own amazing flip books.

Comic Books: Art of the Origin Story

We’ll delve into the process of creating comic book characters with crazy, sad, exciting, intense, complicated, and most of all, fascinating backstories.

Choose Your Own Adventure

We’re calling on the brave and bold for a writing adventure! This semester, we’ll be writing stories that have multiple choices for the reader - different storylines lead them down alternative paths or to alternative endings.

Writing & Drawing Comic Books

Get ready to run faster and jump higher, one frame at a time! Together we’re taking your stories and transforming them into comics. Learn about comic-book language, illustration, and frames and share your next super-adventure.

Romance Unleashed

In Romance Unleashed we’ll teach you how to woo your readers and leave them wanting more. We’ll explore how love and desire drive plot forward, craft characters with greater depth, and make our love stories epic.

The Elements of Fiction

If you can’t wait to turn the page, the writer has succeeded in telling you a great story. What does it take to develop characters, settings, dialogue, and plot elements that have you on the edge of your seat? This workshop answers those questions and more!

Advanced Fiction

There’s always more to learn, fiction writers! Come build on the skills you’ve already got, and dig deeper into the qualities that give all the best stories that extra POP. Whichever genre of fiction you prefer (historical, fantasy, realistic, etc.) is welcome!

Once Upon Un Tiempo

In this bilingual workshop, we'll revisit our favorite children's books through the eyes of a writer and illustrator, getting to the bottom of what makes some books so memorable. Then we'll develop and write our own picture books - mapping out characters, plot and narration.

Poetry Outside

Do you want to be wild and break out of the limitations that are always being set? Poetry is the answer. We’re strapping on our shoes, grabbing our pens, and meeting at the P.S. 187 school yard to go on a poet’s adventure!

Snobby Poetry

We’re a self-motivated, uber-supportive band of misfits who read, write, and share poems. We love words, rhyme (only when used sparely, thank you), observation, and Walt Whitman (obviously).

Creating Otherworlds

It's time for you to be the master of your universe! Let's explore worlds of your own creation, inhabited by beings that only you can imagine.

I feel like if I hadn't taken Girls Rising, I wouldn't have become a better writer, and I wouldn't have met some friends who have changed my life.

Xanthe

Uptown Stories has helped my writing in the sense that it allowed me to realize that this is my passion and that I want to pursue it as a career. It opened my eyes to the possibilities that creative writing has to offer. I think that anyone can get something out of attending Uptown Stories.

Graydon

Writing used to be something that was just work; something we have to do at school. However, now it's a way for me to express different things, and it's much more enjoyable now that there is a place where everyone has the same passion for writing that I do.

Anna

My daughter takes her writing seriously because Uptown Stories takes her seriously.
