Winter Workshops 2022

Winter 2022 Writing Workshops

Many believe writing is a solitary process – truth is, writers need others around. We need to be seen, heard and understood to our very core. We need trusted comrades who will tell us when our writing is on point, when it needs needs another draft, and when its got too many nerdy jokes. We need to laugh and cry and rage – and relish every moment of time spent, together

Whether you’re new to putting words on a page, or you write until your fingers cramp every night, Uptown Stories is where your people are.

Please note, for all in-person workshops students must have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine prior to the start date. We are following state and federal guidelines for COVID-19. All of our teachers are vaccinated, masks are mandatory for all, temperature checks will be done upon entering the building, and a parent/legal guardian will be required to digitally sign a waiver before your child starts their workshop. If you have questions, please email us at [email protected].

If you can’t wait to turn the page, the writer has succeeded in telling you a great story. What does it take to develop characters, settings, dialogue, and plot elements that have you on the edge of your seat? This workshop answers those questions and more! We’ll breakdown the parts of fiction writing each week and test out what we’ve learned with some on-the-spot writing. You’ll work with your peers, too – giving advice and feedback, while hearing what they...

The difference between a good writer and a great writer is the willingness to step outside your comfort zone; this workshop will push you towards greatness. Regardless of your preferred writing genre – and we welcome them all – we gather with two goals in mind: improving our own writing and supporting each other. In short, we’re here to work. During the first half of the workshop, you’ll be challenged with advanced craft exercises, playing with voice, point-of-view, challenging word...

Using the unique language of filmmaking to develop a story in your favorite genre, we’ll start by writing mini-screenplays that will be our filming roadmap. Then we’ll get behind the lens to learn camera techniques, editing and tips of the trade from the Award-Winning director, CJ Gardella. We’ll work together in small film crews, readying our masterpieces for screening at the P.S./I.S. 187 Film Festival at the United Palace, Sunday, March 20, 2022.

We welcome you to Snobby Poetry, should you be up for the challenge. We’re a self-motivated, uber-supportive band of misfits who read, write, and share poems. We love words, rhyme (only when used sparely, thank you), observation, and Walt Whitman (obviously.) Poetry is an illogical measuring device, filled with seemingly impossible comparisons and instructions; that is why we are called to write it. We are the liars who tell the truth. If this...

For many of us, picture books are what first sparked a lifelong joy for reading and crafting stories. From Max's wild rumpus to Sam-I-am's obsession with green eggs and ham, these books stay in our hearts long after the last page has been read. In this bilingual workshop, we'll revisit our favorite children's books through the eyes of a writer and illustrator, getting to the bottom of what makes some books so memorable. Then we'll...
