Summer Workshops 2022

Summer 2022 Writing Workshops

Summer is almost here, and so are our week-long writing workshops! If you’re looking for an activity that will make your summer days not-so-lazy, and filled with joy and adventure, Uptown Stories writing workshops are the answer.

Classes meet Monday-Friday, 10am-2pm, and you’ll find the start dates with each class below. Just like the writing workshops that take place during the school year, our summer classes are small, led by rockstar teachers and are the perfect place to tell your story.

In case that isn’t enough, this summer every workshop is just $25 for a full week of writing, friends and fun.

If your child is interested in a workshop, but is outside the age range, please reach out to us at [email protected] – we may be able to make an exception!

And don’t forget to join our mailing list! Be in the know about new workshops and volunteer opportunities, plus once a month you’ll get the best student writing in NYC, delivered right to your inbox.

Please note, students must have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine prior to the start date. We are following state and federal guidelines for COVID-19. All of our teachers are vaccinated. Masks are no longer required for outside classes, and are no longer required for most indoor classes, but are mandatory in common areas of the Cornerstone Center. Once Upon Un Tiempo and Writing & Drawing Comic Books will require masks to be worn for the duration of class. A parent/legal guardian will be required to digitally sign a waiver before your child starts their workshop. If you have questions, please email us at [email protected].

We’re calling on the brave and bold for a writing adventure! This summer we’ll be writing stories that have multiple choices for the reader - different storylines lead them down alternative paths or to alternative endings. We’ll take inspiration from a few examples like Jason Shiga’s Meanwhile and Ryan North’s To be or not to be, then we’ll build worlds of our own. We’ll dig into key writing techniques and learn some new approaches while we forge our own way – whether it...

Let’s journey into the deepest, darkest corners of our minds, where our imaginations make us shiver, squirm, and silently scream. Yes, we’ll be writing our own page-turning horror stories and screenplays, the kind that make your pulse raise and your hair stand on end. We’ll visit works by masters of the genre, like Edgar Allen Poe, Shirley Jackson, and Stephen King, while discovering newer voices like Steven Graham Jones, Victor LaValle, and Carmen Maria Machado. And because horror can’t be contained...

Using the unique language of filmmaking to develop a story in your favorite genre, we’ll start by writing mini-screenplays that will be our filming roadmap. Then we’ll get behind the lens to learn camera techniques, editing and tips of the trade from the Award-Winning director, CJ Gardella. We’ll work together in small film crews, readying our masterpieces for screening at the P.S./I.S. 187 Film Festival at the United Palace, Sunday, March 20, 2022.

If you can’t wait to turn the page, the writer has succeeded in telling you a great story. What does it take to develop characters, settings, dialogue, and plot elements that have you on the edge of your seat? This workshop answers those questions and more! We’ll breakdown the parts of fiction writing each week and test out what we’ve learned with some on-the-spot writing. You’ll work with your peers, too – giving advice and feedback...

Girls, with all its beauty and all its shortcomings, the world is about to be yours. You’re going to be faced with more choices than your mothers and grandmothers could have ever imagined. Your voice will have as much power as any other woman’s has had in human history, and countering that will be generations-old ingrained bias and inequality. They’re hard to see at times, but we feel the weight of them everyday. This is the workshop where...

Let’s take our writing beyond the page! In this workshop, we’ll take on the fundamentals of playwriting, focusing on dialogue and character. We’ll read (and act!) works from playwriting greats, to get a sense of structure and how what we see on stage plays out on the page. Then we’ll get started writing our own ten-minute plays, meant to be read aloud by the class and some guest professional actors. We’ll also take a trip to Drama Book Shop for...

In The Nature of Poetry, young poets will observe and record nature, finding the poetry in the world around us. In addition to reading and writing poetry, they explore, discover, and create pocket-pals, fairy dwellings, drawings of natural objects, and use all their senses to connect with nature through artistic expression and imagination. A week of local field trips in Washington Heights with a poetry focus will yield artful journals filled with creative experiments from which poems, and their minds,...

Get ready to run faster and jump higher, one frame at a time! Together we’re taking your stories and transforming them into comics. You’ll take an ordinary day (or the wildest story you can imagine) and use comic book language, illustration, and frames to share with everyone the next super-adventure. You don’t need to be an artist to join us – just bring your best ideas. You’ll learn all the steps to comics illustration and development, including pin-ups, single-frame and...

For many of us, picture books are what first sparked a lifelong joy for reading and crafting stories. From Max's wild rumpus to Sam-I-am's obsession with green eggs and ham, these books stay in our hearts long after the last page has been read. In this bilingual workshop, we'll revisit our favorite children's books through the eyes of a writer and illustrator, getting to the bottom of what makes some books so memorable. Then we'll...
