Spring Workshops 2021

Spring 2021 Writing Workshops

It’s spring and our young writers are in full bloom! There’s a skip in our collective step, and we’re hopeful about the direction we’re writing in. We’ve got seven stellar workshops starting the week of April 19 – some will be virtual and some will be in person. Yes, we said it – in person! We’re ready to gather in small groups, at safe distances and, in the words of Emily Dickinson, dwell in possibility. Spring passes quick, so register now before it flutters by!

Please note, Uptown Stories has a limited number of spaces available for new students, so we have elected to reserve those for New York City residents. Our city has been so badly impacted by COVID-19, we want to devote our limited resources to serve children in our local community. If you have questions about this policy, please email [email protected]. Thank you for understanding!

Our Zoom classrooms are kindly made possible by our friends and neighbors at

Mondays & Wednesdays 4:00PM - 5:00PM
In this workshop, we’re building new worlds, brick by brick. You’ll be the mastermind of your imagined world’s past, present and future, setting up the foundation of your story. Since this fantastical new landscape will play a major role in your storyline, we’ll start by drawing detailed maps, giving it features like water, mountains, borders and weather. Then we’ll go even further, using Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky as our inspiration. You’ll invent inhabitants for your world, giving them...

If you can’t wait to turn the page, the writer has succeeded in telling you a great story. What does it take to develop characters, settings, dialogue, and plot elements that have you on the edge of your seat? This workshop answers those questions and more! We’ll breakdown the parts of fiction writing each week and test out what we’ve learned with some on-the-spot writing. You’ll work with your peers, too – giving advice and feedback, while hearing what they...

The difference between a good writer and a great writer is the willingness to step outside your comfort zone; this workshop will push you towards greatness. Regardless of your preferred writing genre – and we welcome them all – we gather with two goals in mind: improving our own writing and supporting each other. In short, we’re here to work. During the first half of the workshop, you’ll be challenged with advanced craft exercises, playing with voice, point-of-view, challenging word...

Fridays, 3:30PM-5:30PM
Poems are like miniature worlds, inviting us to think about the familiar in a new way. This workshop meets safely in-person, outdoors in the schoolyard of 187, from there we go to Ft. Tryon Park together for a poetry adventure. Our young poets will use scavenger hunts and hands-on building activities to create avatars and dioramas out of natural objects that spark imagination and inspire poetry about whatever we want. Using poetry to imagine the fantastic out of the ordinary, we will...

Grab your pens and your moral compass because we’re going on an epic journey! With Josh Bayer as our brave leader, we’ll be creating, writing, and illustrating comics featuring our very own heroes, from origin story to the victorious last battle. Who is your hero? An ordinary human? Space Cat? Robot? And where do they come from? Earth? A distant planet? NYC? Are they on a quest? Will they use mind-boggling intelligence or creativity to rise above obstacles? Maybe your...
